About Mockingbird Web Design

Mockingbird Web Design is a small studio run by Wren Caldwell out of a shared workspace in an old tea factory. We build websites for small businesses, independent professionals, and community-focused organizations — the kinds of projects where the client actually has to live with the result for years, not just sign off and move on.

How we got here

Wren started Mockingbird in 2019 after a decade doing in-house web work for three different employers and watching the same pattern play out every time: a shiny new website would launch with great fanfare, then slowly fall apart as nobody had time to update it, optimize it, or understand how it worked.

The studio is named after the idea of listening carefully and then reflecting back clearly — which is a decent summary of what good design work actually requires. Most clients don’t need flashier; they need more of their own voice, shaped into something that looks and feels like the business they’ve built.

What we believe

Simple outlasts clever. Elaborate scroll effects and novel interactions are fun to show off, but the sites that still work well five years later are the ones where every choice was made for a reason and nothing was there just to impress.

Your site isn’t a brochure. It’s infrastructure. Treat it like your storefront, your filing cabinet, and your hardest-working salesperson rolled into one — because that’s what it actually is.

You should own your site. No proprietary platforms, no vendor lock-in, no “we can’t give you that because our system doesn’t work that way.” We build on open tools (WordPress, Bricks Builder, static site generators where appropriate) so you can take your site anywhere you want to take it.

We’re selective about projects because we think it’s the only honest way to run a small studio. Good fits:

• Small businesses that have outgrown a DIY site and want to do it right the second time
• Professionals who need a site that actually brings in qualified leads instead of sitting there looking professional
• Nonprofits and community organizations where budget matters and every dollar has to earn its keep

If you’re looking for a big agency, we’re not it. If you want the cheapest option out there, we’re also not it. If you want someone who’ll take your project seriously, listen more than they talk, and build you a site that works — we’d love to hear from you.
